6 Simple New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthier Smile in 2025
December 19, 2024
With 2025 right around the corner, you might be starting to think about what you’re doing right and where there are areas of improvement. If that’s the case, don’t forget about your oral health! Below, you’ll find six simple New Year’s Resolutions that will make your smile even better in 2025.
1. Floss Every Night Before Bed
Remember, brushing alone only cleans about 60% of the surface of your teeth. That’s why it’s so important to floss – even after a long day. Carefully and thoroughly cleaning between each tooth won’t just help prevent cavities from developing between your teeth; it will also reduce your risk of gum disease!
2. Eat More Vegetables
All too often, people focus on what they should cut out of their diet. This year, take a different approach: focus on what you can add to your diet. Apples, carrots, and celery are great examples because, in addition to being packed with nutrients, they remove food particles and other debris from your teeth!
3. Replace Your Toothbrush Every Quarter
There’s a common misconception that – as long as you brush your teeth – that’s all that matters. The reality is that there are other factors that need to be considered. For example, you need to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and replace yours every quarter (before the bristles are old and frayed).
4. Schedule a Dental Checkup Biannually
Routine dental checkups and cleanings are crucial for several reasons, including the fact that your dentist screens for oral cancer, tooth decay, and periodontal disease, and your dental hygienist removes built-up plaque and tartar. So, book an appointment every six months – your smile will thank you for it!
5. Clean Your Tongue
Like many patients, your oral hygiene regimen may focus almost exclusively on your teeth and gums. However, your tongue takes up a lot of real estate in your mouth, and it can quickly develop a sticky, white film if you don’t clean it consistently. Fortunately, you already have what you need: a toothbrush!
6. Rinse with Mouthwash for 30-60 Seconds
Rinsing with an ADA-approved mouthwash each day has lots of benefits – from killing bacteria and removing plaque to reducing your risk of gum disease and keeping your breath minty-fresh. So, make sure that it’s a part of your daily routine, and that you rinse for the full 30-60 seconds!
